Some moms put sunglasses on their kids because they look adorable! Few things say stylish baby like a little cutie rocking a pair of sunglasses.
I bought my son his first pair of sunglasses right after he came home to us (via adoption). He was 10 months old. I noticed that every time wed walk outside or Id pull him out of his car seat, he would squint his eyes and attempt to cover them immediately. Granted, we lived in Arizona, where the sun shines 364 days a year, but sunlight clearly made him uncomfortable.
And yes, he looked darling in those sunglasses. But the most interesting part was that he left them on. Most babies and toddlers pull accessorizes off and toss them on the floor or play with them. I believe that he knew they made his eyes more comfortable.
About a year-and-a-half after hed been home with his, he was diagnosed with a congenital eye defect. Based on his anatomy, he should be legally blind. In fact, his eye doctor was certain he barely had any vision at all when the condition was first discovered. We are so very lucky that he has his sight good sight and that hes able to see. Theres no logical explanation for that, but I do not believe in looking a gift horse in the mouth.
We learned that his condition makes his eyes extremely sun sensitive. I personally cannot leave the house without sunglasses Ive worn them nearly every day since I first started wearing contacts at 12 years old, so I can only imagine how much the sun hurts his eyes. As a result, he still wears sunglasses almost daily and hes now 4 years old.
I figured that the sunglasses habit only had its benefits, so as soon as we adopted my daughter, I bought a few pairs for her. And because shes a year younger than my son, she must do everything he does.

Sunglasses, such as the Babiators picture here, serve a much bigger purpose than making your baby the most stylish on the block. They protect your childs eyes. And unlike sunscreen, which can be controversial because of the chemicals, sunglasses put nothing into your childs body. The Babiators site explains the importance of protecting your babys eyes with sunglasses very well.
Remember that habits are formed young! If you can get your littlest ones accustomed to wearing sunglasses now, it will become second nature to leave the house with sunglasses on their eyes, just like its habit to leave with shoes on their feet!
