McAllen company recalling papayas from Mexico

Agromod Produce Inc. of McAllen has issued a recall of papayas because of possible salmonella contamination.

A news release issued by the Food and Drug Administration on Saturday says that Agromod is recalling all Blondie, Yaya, Mañanita and Tastylicious brand papayas sold before Saturday. The papayas were distributed across the nation and in Canada through retail stores and wholesalers.

Salmonella infection, which is sometimes serious and can be fatal, causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The FDA said the papayas might be linked to 97 reported cases of Salmonella agona infection, including 10 hospitalizations in 23 states. The FDA and the company are investigating the source of the problem.

Consumers are urged to return the papayas to the place of purchase. They also can call the company for more information at 800-385-7658, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

We have calls in to the largest Austin grocers to see if any were distributed here.
