Free screenings, eyeglasses offered to low-income residents next week

As part of a national diabetes awareness campaign, free diabetes screenings will be offered Aug. 27 and local optometrists will be performing free vision tests and providing glasses to uninsured and underinsured Central Texans who have diabetes or are at risk for it.

The services are courtesy of VSP Vision Care, which is partnering with the American Diabetes Association and the Texas Optometric Association. Together they are launching Eye on Diabetes, a campaign to underscore the connection between eye care and diabetes. Blindness is a complication of diabetes.

Each year, as many as 24,000 people lose their sight because of diabetes, according to the campaign.

The “SeeZar” mobile clinic will be parked on Colorado Street between 12th and 13th by the State Capitol. Parking meters will be blocked off to provide access to patients and volunteer doctors during appointment times, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To qualify, a person must have a Social Security number, be without vision insurance and meet certain income guidelines, spokeswoman Lisa Park said. They also cannot have used the program in the past 12 months, she said. The program can serve 50 people and has most slots still open, she added.

For an appointment, call the program’s hotline at 866-549-9301.
