McDonald’s to make healthier Happy Meals

McDonald’s has made childhood obesity advocates extremely happy.Bowing to pressure from health advocates, the new Happy Meals will include apple slices, a new smaller serving of French fries and a choice of fat-free chocolate milk or 1% low-fat white milk, per a company press release. Customers may choose to replace the fries with an extra bag of apple slices.The company has pledged to raise nutrition awareness to kids and their parents in “100%” of its marketing and packaging. The news kids’ meals will be available in September.These changes are compliant with the Council for Better Business Bureaus Food Pledge. Earlier this month, companies like Coca-Cola, Kraft and Kellogg’s agreed to abide by government bylines for creating and marketing kids’ food.”McDonald’s will always try to do the right thing, and we know we can help make a difference in our communities,” said Jan Fields, president, McDonald’s USA. “The commitments we’re announcing today will guide the future evolution of our menu and marketing.”According to nutrition info on McDonald’s website, Happy Meals now range in calories from 380 for a burger, apple dippers and juice to 700 for a cheeseburger, fries and chocolate milk.By 2015, McDonald’s will slash sodium from its entire menu by an average of 15% and work toward reformulating portion size and fat and sugar content.
